Understanding website tracking

Moosend provides a web analysis service that collects data from websites and makes this data available to users. You can record the actions your users perform on your website and connect those with campaigns for the ultimate personalization experience. Tracking also allows you to set up automations and engage with your subscribers through workflows that are triggered by your site visitors, such as adding an item to their shopping carts, or subscribing to your email list. 

This topic describes the general tracking services that our platform offers after adding your website. This is made possible by setting up website tracking and visitor tracking, and identifying users.

A. Website tracking

The Moosend web analysis service collects data and makes this data available for reporting, segmentation, and automation. Direct access to the data is only provided through the use of our platform. The data may be used in anonymized and aggregated form from Moosend for reporting purposes.

To enable website tracking, you need to add a unique tracking code-snippet behind any areas of your website where you want to track your site visitors and utilize their activity as triggers for your automation workflows or use plugins. Some web-hosting services merely require a tracking ID, so that option is also available. You can use one of these installation methods that applies to your website:

B. Visitor tracking

Moosend website tracking uses proprietary, cookie-based, technology to track data on end-user page visits, product views, user cart, and purchase information, such as product quantity and pricing. Data collection can be turned on or off. Moosend has no control of the status or information shared through its website tracking feature. More specifically, the cookie-technology stores:

  • An identification number to uniquely identify a user's browser session.
  • An identification number to uniquely identify a browser. It is not possible to uniquely identify a device with this feature.
  • An identification number to uniquely identify the relevant website.
  • Relevant flags to enable or disable certain library features including but not limited to the Exit Intent functionality.

C. Identifying your website users

Website tracking uses cookies to link the data to specific users are identified by their email addresses. This setup allows for more accurate tracking of end-users by associating them with the same ID over various sessions and devices. This functionality is called identify. Specific user data collection as part of the identify functionality can be turned on or off by the relevant client of our platform. Moosend has no control of the status or information shared through its website tracking feature.

There are four ways to identify someone's email address when they're visiting your site:

  • When they reach your website via a link inside one of your newsletters
  • If they add their email address to a subscription form on your site
  • When they register on your website
  • When they log in to your website

Similar to website tracking, you can enable identify by adding a unique tracking code using a JS tracking library or a PHP tracking library, or by using supported plugins. Some CMS applications merely require a tracking ID, which is also an available option.
