What is the Abandoned cart recipe and how can you use it

The abandoned cart email automation recipe sends an email to customers who have added items to their online cart but didn't move ahead with a purchase, reminding them of their items and thus increasing the conversions on your site and propelling your sales.
If you have already found the Abandoned cart recipe among the available Recipes and you are already familiar with how to navigate, edit and use Recipes, then let's go right ahead and see what this particular recipe can do for you:

A. Overview

The trigger (1) most suited for this type of automation is called When someone adds any product to their cart and fires up the automation when an item is added to a customer's online cart. The Wait for 45 minute(s) Control step, situated right after our trigger (2), provides the necessary interval between the placement of the item on the customer's cart and the rest of the automation steps, giving them enough time to move ahead with a purchase. The Filter contacts Conditional step that follows (3) filters customers who moved ahead with a purchase of a product, from the ones who did not purchase anything. If a customer has made no purchase 45 minutes after placing an item in their online cart, then the Then send email campaign Action step (4) will reach out to them with a campaign of your choice.

B. Changing the Recipe
If you are already familiar with how to use Action steps and Conditional / Control steps, you can use that knowledge to change parts of this recipe as you see fit. It is exactly like creating or editing one of your own automation designs: you can add steps, remove, or edit the steps already available to fit your design's needs.

You can also save your changes as a custom recipe, and use it at your leisure.abandoned_cart_recipe_2-new.png

C. Using the Recipe

A recipe cannot be activated as it is. You will first have to complete all the incomplete tasks found in the task list and transform the recipe into a fully functional automation workflow before you can activate it.

The Abandoned cart recipe only requires a few tweaks:
1. Click on the Filter step.abandoned_cart_recipe_3.png

2. Choose which list of people you will be checking for recent purchases, from the Apply this set of filters to drop-down menu.abandoned_cart_recipe_4.png

Among your options you will find:

  • Apply to any mailing list
  • Apply to mailing list of the recipient performing the action
  • Apply to mailing list <Mailing list name>
    ...

Click on the Save button when you are done.

3. Click on the Then send email campaign step.

4. Select the appropriate Campaign options in the available fields.abandoned_cart_recipe_5.png

This type of action requires that you define a Subject line, the "From" name, the Content as well as set an optional Emails per day cap so that a customer won't get more emails than you would want on the same day. Click on Save when you are done.

5. Don't forget to activate your automation by toggling the switch to Active.

Remember, this type of recipe requires that you connect your website to your account so that your automation workflows know when a customer of your website abandons an item in their online cart.
